“BRIDGES training was powerful!”
Colleen Romito, Timeless Wings in Zanesville, OH – Spring 2019
Since 1991, older adults and youth have been benefiting from the BRIDGES Program Curricula. Formal evaluations combined with narratives from teachers and volunteer coordinators in the field show that BRIDGES:
- Is an effective method to unite generations
- Provides older adults with the opportunity to connect with others, increasing their sense of purpose and decreasing feelings of isolation
- Helps students feel more comfortable with older adults, creating positive images of what older adults can do and increasing their social-emotional skills
The requests for BRIDGES trainings keep coming in from around the world! Now – with the financial support of The Retirement Research Foundation & Tufts Health Plan Foundation – Bridges Together offers an online training program for BRIDGES.
The training program was piloted in 7 communities including across 5 states: Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire and Ohio. Local BRIDGES Leadership Team members who were trained represented assisted living communities, churches, housing authorities, nursing homes, park & rec programs, preschool & elementary schools, senior centers, universities and a YMCA.
The feedback was very positive.
One teacher wrote: The program was wonderful. My students developed empathy, were 100% engaged in the lessons/relationships, and were able to build upon their leadership skills. I was impressed with the amount of wonderful benefits that happened throughout the program, during, and even after. This was extremely beneficial in our type of socioeconomic area and transitional school district. The relationships my students had with their grandmas or grandpas was often times the only relationship they had even outside of school.
A volunteer coordinator wrote: “This is a very positive pilot program that fosters educational awareness within IG communities. As one who works for an agency that serves the elderly and EL children, I can attest to the power of young and old interaction! Keep bringing this much needed and welcomed program to people around the world.”
Andrea J. Fonte Weaver, BRIDGES Program developer reflects: I am so pleased with the online training – as it has the hallmarks of our BT Trainings: depth, practical information, opportunities for leadership team members to get to know one another and the dynamic spirit for which we are known. I’m excited that people around the world will be able to take advantage of this awesome program and create BRIDGES in their own community – now in a very affordable manner.
