Intergenerational Beach Reads

At BT, we love everything IG! These are some of our favorite “beach reads.”  You can check with your local library and there are also some links provided below. We provide a short overview and a link so you may explore more. As a reminder, many of these can be found at your library.

The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer Holm  — A young adult book that prompts us to ponder if would we really want to live forever; what does it mean to be a good friend; who are the important female scientists that have not been celebrated in our history; how can we be in relationship with a grandparent/grandchild when there is tension with the parent? A quick read that can lead to many rich discussions.

The Giver by Lois Lowry – Quickly becoming a classic book and movie , try reading The Giver with an intergenerational lens, reflecting on the lifespan, rites of passage and the relationship between the Giver and the youth.  An interesting twist…

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman – As the old adage goes, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” and this is as true for people as it is for books. And so it is for Ove’s new neighbors and the unexpected results of moving in next door.  At Bridges Together, we talk about “a circle of love.” In this book, we witness the transformative power of intergenerational relationships as an isolated man is brought into “the circle of love.” There are also other books by Fredrik Backman’s with intergenerational themes.

The Elm Creek Quilt Series by Jennifer Chiaverini – It all begins with Sylvia, a master quilter, asking a young woman to help her clean out her family’s estate. What transpires over a dozen novels is a journey of deep intergenerational friendship, a walk through different periods of American history and a quilting retreat center – filled with diverse, rich lives of women.

The Hideaway by Laura Denton – Sara unexpectedly inherits her grandmother’s house – along with the charge  and funds to fix it up. Through the cleaning out and restoration, Sara learns a lot about her grandmother… herself and what it means to truly be part of an endless “circle of love”.

The Sweetness of Forgetting by Kristin Harmel – A grandmother suffering from dementia has a clear day and gives her adult granddaughter an envelope to go to Paris, complete with the funds to do so and a list of names. What follows is a journey to understand her grandmother’s past and present. The clues: a variety of cookies…

The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks  – What happens when a young college woman stops to assist an older man who was in a car accident?  An unlikely friendship develops that changes both their lives. It is… a long and enjoyable ride!,+Low_00000000&2sid=Google_&sourceId=PLGoP79700&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwsbI7Off2wIVliWBCh0KkgosEAQYAyABEgIGqfD_BwE
