Rusty’s Known Antidote to Isolation

We recently sent out our annual fund letter and wanted to share it in this space in hopes that you will join us by reading and providing a donation today. This is such a wonderful story and a perfect example of the work we do at Bridges Together–it reflect what your donations provide today and for the future. Thank you!

As a Bridges Together supporter, I wanted to share this story.

Jacob and Rusty are all smiles after an event resulting from a Bridges Together training

“It opened me up to more than just my little world” said Rusty Brady. As an older adult withfamily living away from her home in Topsfield, Massachusetts, Rusty wanted to spend more time with youngsters, but she wasn’t sure what to do. Rusty is very active on the Council on Aging, an agency that supports older adults and their families.

The Topsfield Council on Aging and the Tri-Council for empowering youth knew that isolation among older adult and adolescents is on the rise and can lead to health issues equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. They had heard of the benefits of intergenerational (IG) programs and set out to find someone to help them.

They contacted Bridges Together , a globally recognized leader in training communities in programs that bring older and younger people together with a common purpose – to make their lives richer by strengthening their social, emotional and cognitive well-being.After the Bridges Together training in Topsfield, Rusty was paired with Jacob Menzer, a fourth grader at the elementary school. “We got to play cool games and just learn about people” said Jacob. Through this new friendship, both Rusty and Jacob had the opportunity to be with different people in other age groups, experience new things and create life-changing memories.

Can I count on you to help us implement more IG programs in communities like Topsfield? Your gift of $25, $50, $100 will allow us to continue training and educating professionals and community leaders on the importance of IG topics. As Paula Burke, the Topsfield Council on Aging’s Executive Director said, “It isn’t just putting people together in the same room.” It’s changing older and younger lives for the better.

With gratitude for your support,

Andrea J. Fonte Weaver
Founder & Executive Director
